Dominican Republic tourism expands with cruise arrivals and new hotel developments
The Dominican Republic's tourism sector is experiencing significant growth through infrastructure expansion and increased visitor arrivals. In a single day, the country welcomed 16,287 cruise passengers across four vessels. Three ships docked in Puerto Plata at the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay terminals, while the Freedom of the Seas arrived in Pedernales at the Cabo Rojo terminal. This simultaneous activity in both the north and south is projected to generate approximately $1.6 million in economic impact.
In the hospitality sector, Lopesan Hotel Group has expanded its presence in Punta Cana by adding three new five-star resorts in Playa Bávaro: Lopesan Caoba Lagoon, Lopesan Splash Cove, and Lopesan Serenity Bay. This expansion brings the group's total to four establishments in the area, catering to diverse traveler profiles including families and adults-only segments.
Other regional developments include the Punta Bergantín project in the north, which has seen over $56 million invested in tourism and real estate infrastructure. Additionally, the Dominican Association of Health Tourism (ADTS) reported that the nation now receives more than 300,000 international medical patients annually, supported by new legislative efforts to regulate the health tourism sector. In Dajabón, the local Tourism Cluster has also expanded its membership to further promote regional hospitality and service standards.
