Dominican Republic investigates citizens recruited for war in Russia

The Dominican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) is investigating reports that Dominican citizens have been recruited for military service in the Russia-Ukraine conflict under false pretenses. Foreign Minister Víctor 'Ito' Bisonó warned the public against accepting high-paying job offers in Russia that may lead to combat involvement.

Authorities have formally identified 20 Dominican nationals whose families claim they were lured by employment opportunities but were subsequently incorporated into the war effort. Families report that the actual working conditions in Russia do not match the initial job offers. The ministry has received a total of 22 reports related to these cases, including testimonies from individuals who have returned from Russia.

MIREX has requested information from Russian authorities regarding the identified citizens and has instructed the Dominican ambassador in Russia to maintain close contact with local officials to provide consular assistance. The ministry noted that while some involved individuals signed individual contracts while in Russian territory, the circumstances of their recruitment appear deceptive.
