Dominican Republic implements electric transit and manages fuel subsidies

The Dominican Republic is implementing several economic and infrastructure initiatives. In Santo Domingo, President Luis Abinader and Tourism Minister David Collado inaugurated the Ciudad Colonial Electromobility Route. This project, funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the European Union, features five electric buses designed for accessibility to improve mobility for residents and tourists while promoting decarbonization. Additionally, the Alcázar de Colón Museum has reopened with modernized exhibits.

Economically, the country is managing rising fuel costs through the Plan Anticrisis, which has allocated over RD$35,500 million in subsidies to mitigate international price hikes for consumers. In response to these costs, transport unions (G-12) have agreed with the government to maintain current passenger fares. Meanwhile, the mining sector is projected to export over US$2,500 million this year, driven by gold, copper, and zinc.

Other developments include the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and SMEs promoting Artificial Intelligence to boost productivity in small businesses, and political calls to include Dominican rice in trade negotiations with the United States. The national economy grew by 4.5% between January and August 2026, supported by construction, services, and manufacturing.
