Santo Domingo transport and urban infrastructure updates

Overview

Public transportation and urban infrastructure in Santo Domingo continue to undergo technical and structural updates. The Metropolitan Transport Company (EMT) has initiated an overhaul of the Santo Domingo Metro to address maintenance needs in the 17-year-old network, including the implementation of a computerized synchronization system for electrical substations. In the Ciudad Colonial, the government has launched an electric mobility pilot project funded by the European Union and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

A mobility study released by the National Institute of Transit and Land Transport (INTRANT), supported by the French Development Agency and the European Union, confirms that 6.7 million trips are made daily in the metropolitan area. The study indicates that 31.7% of all trips are destined for the National District. While the use of public cars (conchos) dropped from 14% in 2018 to 8% during the 2025-2026 period, other modes have gained ground, including private motorcycles (10%), motoconchos (7.7%), and ride-sharing services like Uber (7.4%). Mass transit, including the Metro, now accounts for 37.4% of trips, with Metro usage specifically growing by 10.9% following capacity expansions.

To address congestion, Alfredo Pulinario Mariot of the Mochotran movement has called for the acceleration of exclusive bus corridors. In response to service complaints, the Metropolitan Bus Service Operator (OMSA) has relaunched the La Nueva Barquita corridor in Santo Domingo Este with six refurbished buses. To encourage ridership, OMSA is offering 15 days of free service and permanent free access for senior citizens. Infrastructure developments also include an ongoing feasibility study for a fourth Metro line to connect the Olympic Center with San Cristóbal.
