Dominican Republic issues weather alerts as tropical wave approaches

A tropical wave and a trough are expected to bring increased rainfall, thunderstorms, and wind gusts to the Dominican Republic starting Tuesday afternoon. The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reports that the heaviest precipitation will likely affect provinces including Gran Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, La Altagracia, La Romana, and San José de Ocoa.

The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has issued a green alert for Gran Santo Domingo, the Distrito Nacional, and San Cristóbal due to the risk of flash flooding, rising rivers, and urban inundation. Authorities have also advised small vessels to navigate with caution along the southern and southwestern coasts due to abnormal waves and wind.

Separately, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) is monitoring an area of low pressure in the Atlantic, located approximately 500 miles southwest of the Cabo Verde islands. This system has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical storm within the next seven days. Other atmospheric disturbances are also being monitored, though they currently pose no direct threat to the country.
