Dominican Republic weather alerts issued as heavy rains cause damage FAST-MOVING
Heavy rainfall caused by a trough and high humidity levels has triggered widespread weather alerts across the Dominican Republic. The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) has placed multiple provinces under yellow and green alerts due to the risk of urban flooding, rising river levels, and landslides.
The storms have already caused significant impact, affecting approximately 412 people and damaging 103 homes. Specific damage was reported in Independencia, Bahoruco, and Barahona. Additionally, the flooding has left one community isolated in Monte Plata and disrupted water services in several provinces, including San Juan, Azua, and San Cristóbal, affecting over 400,000 users.
Educational authorities have suspended classes in Peravia, Barahona, and Pedernales to ensure the safety of students and staff. The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) warns that unstable conditions, including electrical storms and strong winds, are expected to persist, with maritime warnings in place for small and medium-sized vessels due to abnormal waves.
