Dominican Republic's INTRANT to grant learning permits to graduating students
Milton Morrison, executive director of the Instituto Nacional de Tránsito y Transporte Terrestre (INTRANT), taught a road‑safety class to 40 sixth‑grade secondary students at Liceo Víctor Garrido. He announced a pilot program in which participants of the "Guardianes del Tránsito" initiative who pass the theoretical driving exam will receive a learning permit together with their high‑school diploma.
The programme, a partnership between INTRANT and the Ministry of Education, will be expanded into the national school curriculum from the next academic year. Morrison highlighted that around 70 % of traffic‑fatality victims in the Dominican Republic are motorcyclists, underscoring the need for early education on responsible driving. The pilot already involves roughly 4,000 students, allowing them to count 30 of the required 60 community‑service hours toward graduation.
The aim is to cultivate a culture of road‑safety awareness among young citizens and reduce traffic accidents nationwide.
