Donald Trump threatens Iran with ‘economic D-Day’ to secure Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump has announced plans for an intensive economic campaign against Iran, which he described on Truth Social as an ‘economic D-Day’. The strategy aims to force Iran to relinquish control of the Strait of Hormuz and isolate the nation from global financial systems. Trump warned that any country providing economic or logistical support to Tehran, including through financial institutions, businesses, or shipping, would face ‘devastating economic consequences’ from the United States.

This escalation comes amid domestic economic pressures in the US, including a 26.7 percent increase in gasoline prices and a national debt exceeding 40 trillion dollars. In the region, the United Arab Emirates has reportedly responded to US pressure by suspending certain trade and financial transactions with Iran.

Separately, Iranian officials stated that Tehran and Oman have reached a preliminary agreement on a maritime roadmap for the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that while temporary shipping routes have been agreed upon, a permanent solution requires the United States to lift its naval blockade, end oil sanctions, and release frozen Iranian assets.
