Donald Trump arrives at G7 summit in France as ties with European leaders fray

U.S. President Donald Trump landed in Evian‑les‑Bains for the Group of Seven summit without the expected greeting from French President Emmanuel Macron, who was represented by the head of the presidential protocol service. The leaders are slated to hold a bilateral meeting during the three‑day gathering, which will also address the war in Ukraine, the global economy and a recent preliminary agreement with Iran.

Trump’s visit has been marked by sharp rhetoric toward fellow G7 members. He has threatened 100 % tariffs on French wine over the EU’s digital‑services tax, accused allies of unwillingness to join a U.S.–Israel‑Iran conflict, and publicly insulted leaders in France, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Japan. The discord comes as the summit seeks consensus on energy‑route security, the Hormuz Strait, and the broader strategic challenges facing the alliance.

Despite the tensions, the G7 agenda remains focused on coordination over Ukraine, economic imbalances and securing critical mineral supplies outside China.
