G7 summit, US-Iran diplomatic deadlock and Russian energy
Overview
The G7 in Evian‑les‑Bains (15‑17 June 2026) adopted a hard‑line stance on Ukraine, Iran and the global economy, imposing tougher sanctions on Russia’s energy and defence sectors and pledging long‑range missiles and air‑defence aid for Kyiv. The United States, led by President Donald Trump, announced a provisional cease‑fire with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and later AI‑security talks after new export controls. In the weeks that followed, Ukraine escalated drone and missile strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, crippling the Orenburg gas plant and several refineries. By late June fifteen Russian regions imposed fuel‑rationing and long queues appeared at gas stations. On 8 July Trump declared the US‑Iran cease‑fire over, accusing Tehran of violations; the United States revoked a sanctions waiver, imposed new sanctions on Iranian financiers, and regional mediators from Qatar and Oman continued indirect talks. Two days later Iran’s chief negotiator warned the conflict could not end by surrender. Mid‑July Ukrainian drones hit 24 of Russia’s 34 large refineries, cutting crude‑processing capacity to a 21‑year low and prompting export bans on diesel, gasoline and jet fuel through 2027. Public discontent grew and President Vladimir Putin’s approval fell to its lowest level since the invasion began. The Trump administration kept diplomatic channels open with Iran, conducting airstrikes, releasing an American detainee and welcoming Pakistan‑mediated dialogue. On 2 August further Ukrainian drone attacks disabled 20‑40% of Russian refining capacity and struck Wildberries warehouses, triggering nationwide fuel shortages, 40-litre-per-vehicle rationing, extended export bans, sharp consumer-price spikes and a rise in antidepressant and alcohol use. Putin’s approval slipped further and calls for regime change emerged. On 3 August Trump announced the start of new US‑Iran talks, a claim Iran denied, saying negotiations were only with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz, underscoring the persisting diplomatic tension.
