Donald Trump assures full reopening of Strait of Hormuz at G7 summit

Trump announced that the recently reached agreement with Iran will lead to the complete reopening of the Strait of Hormuz by Friday and that no tolls will be imposed on passing vessels. He linked the move to a sharp drop in global oil prices and a rise in stock markets.

European leaders expressed caution. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz presented Trump with a souvenir jersey, while the European heads asked for concrete security guarantees for navigation through the strait. Macron said France, together with the United Kingdom, will head a naval coordination mission involving about twenty countries to ensure safe passage.

Trump said he might attend the signing ceremony in Geneva but was not certain. He also referenced related regional issues, noting that the United States would seek talks on Lebanon’s Hezbollah and hinted at a possible diplomatic push on the Ukraine‑Russia war after the Iran deal.
