Elon Musk receives National Medal of Science from Donald Trump
President Donald Trump hosted the ‘Science: A New Golden Age’ summit at the Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C., on October 8, 2026, to honor several prominent leaders in the American technology sector. During the ceremony, Trump awarded the National Medal of Science to Elon Musk, Sergey Brin, Jensen Huang, and Lisa Su. Trump specifically praised Musk, describing him as a ‘national treasure’ and the ‘modern-day Thomas Edison.’
In addition to the National Medal of Science, the National Medal of Technology and Innovation was presented to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Dell founder Michael Dell. The awards recognize significant contributions to fields such as space exploration, artificial intelligence, semiconductor engineering, and cloud computing.
The event also highlighted a perceived reconciliation between Trump and Musk following a period of public disagreement in 2025 regarding federal spending and government efficiency. Musk, who previously led efforts within the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is reportedly set to take on a role as co-director of ‘Project Meridian,’ a Department of Defense initiative focused on the future of warfare.
