US presidential awards for science and technology leaders

Overview

On October 8, 2026, President Donald Trump hosted the ‘Science: A New Golden Age Summit’ at the Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C., to present the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation to several prominent technology leaders.

Recipients of the National Medal of Science included Elon Musk for space exploration and intelligent systems, Sergey Brin for information retrieval algorithms, Jensen Huang for GPU architecture and superintelligence, and Lisa Su for semiconductor engineering and exascale supercomputing. The National Medal of Technology and Innovation was awarded to Satya Nadella for cloud computing and Michael Dell for personal and enterprise computing.

During the ceremony, Trump praised Musk as a ‘national treasure’ and the ‘modern-day Thomas Edison.’ The event served as a significant reconciliation between Trump and Musk following their public dispute in early summer 2025 regarding fiscal policies and Musk’s departure from the Department of Government Efficiency. Following the awards, Musk is reportedly set to join ‘Project Meridian’ as co-director, a Department of Defense initiative focused on the future of warfare technology.

On October 9, 2026, reports emerged regarding an unexpected moment during the proceedings. A moderator interrupted the ceremony to present President Trump with a framed version of the National Science Medal previously awarded to his late uncle, John G. Trump, a radiation studies researcher at MIT. The gesture drew social media criticism, with some observers labeling the framed medal a ‘consolation prize’ because the scientific achievements belonged to the President’s deceased relative.
