Donald Trump delays Iran strike, launches talks on July 3

U.S. President Donald Trump announced aboard Air Force One that negotiations with Iran will begin on Monday, July 3, after he cancelled a planned massive attack. He said the decision came at the request of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, which believe an agreement is possible.

Trump indicated the talks could address the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a broader nuclear settlement that would lead to Iran’s denuclearisation. The announcement follows months of fighting that began on Feb. 28 when the United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran, and it comes amid renewed Iranian attacks on U.S. forces in Jordan and Iraq and Iran’s continued blockage of the strategic oil‑shipping lane.
