Donald Trump faces criticism over pardons and papal dispute

Pope Leo XIV, on a visit to Spain, publicly condemned the rhetoric of U.S. President Donald Trump, urging an end to violence and praising Spain’s commitment to multilateralism. In his Madrid address, the pontiff warned that “the message of peace may sound naive to some and provocative to others,” highlighting concerns over the war in Ukraine and the broader political tone.

Meanwhile, U.S. comedian John Oliver used his HBO show “Last Week Tonight” to denounce Trump’s extensive use of the presidential pardon power. Oliver highlighted that nearly 2,000 pardons have been granted, including many participants in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and other high‑profile figures, arguing that the practice benefits Trump’s allies and undermines the rule of law.
