At the 2026 G7 summit in Evian‑les‑Bains and Versailles, U.S. President Donald Trump met French President Emmanuel Macron, attended a lavish dinner at the Palace of Versailles and signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran that opened a 60‑day cease‑fire in the Strait of Hormuz and pledged to unfreeze Iranian assets. The agreement, described by Trump as “the real deal,” was criticised as non‑binding and vague, with U.S. officials noting it left key nuclear and financial safeguards unresolved.

Trump also threatened to impose 100 % tariffs on French wine and champagne unless France repealed its digital services tax, prompting Macron to promise a “respectful but firm” discussion. During the summit, Trump sparred with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida (Taka Kōiki) over a Pearl Harbor reference, requiring other leaders to intervene, and later praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “great leader” while claiming “fair business” with India. In a separate press encounter, he told a reporter, “I know what's going on a hell of a lot better than you do,” and later asserted, “We fought very well with Israel.”

An AP‑NORC poll released after the summit showed 65 % of U.S. adults disapproved of Trump’s handling of Iran, while overall presidential approval remained at 37 %. The summit also featured diplomatic overtures from Portugal’s António Costa with Russia, and a mixed media assessment of Trump’s health following a handshake with Macron.
