Donald Trump announces new US‑Iran talks and halts planned attack FAST-MOVING
U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that the United States will resume negotiations with Iran starting Monday afternoon, after he cancelled a planned joint U.S.–Israel strike that he said would have been the biggest military operation since World War II. Trump said the decision came after requests from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Iran, adding that the allies asked the United States to hold off because they believed an agreement was possible.
He said the talks will first address the Strait of Hormuz – a key route for about 20 % of the world’s crude oil and LNG – and then move on to Iran’s nuclear programme and its denuclearisation. Global oil markets reacted sharply, with Brent crude and U.S. WTI falling about 4.5 %–4.7 % after the announcement.
Iran’s foreign ministry denied that Tehran asked the United States to postpone the attack. Iranian officials said negotiations with Oman on a new navigation route through the Strait of Hormuz are “near finalisation.” A separate report from the UK maritime safety agency noted an explosion near a tanker in the strait, with the crew reported safe.
