Donald Trump promises economic war against Iran

United States President Donald Trump has pledged to launch a devastating economic war against Iran to break the current geopolitical stalemate. This escalation follows existing US sanctions targeting Iranian leadership and oil sales through the Strait of Hormuz.

The US Treasury Department is shifting focus toward dismantling clandestine trade networks and banking circuits used by Iran to evade sanctions and procure weapons. Officials have identified the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, and Singapore as key hubs for these activities.

Following a telephone conversation between Trump and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi announced an immediate cessation of all economic, commercial, and financial transactions with Iran.

China remains the most significant partner at risk due to its role as Iran's primary trading partner and oil buyer. According to World Trade Organization data, China accounted for over a quarter of Iran's 2024 trade, with $18 billion in imports and $14.5 billion in exports. Reports indicate China has historically purchased up to 90% of Iran's oil exports, openly challenging Western sanctions.
