Donald Trump proposes renaming Atlantic or Pacific Ocean
During a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Donald Trump proposed renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean to ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas.’ He expressed a desire to see such a change enacted before the end of his term, stating, ‘We need a river and we need an ocean.’
This suggestion follows previous actions where the administration directed federal agencies to use the name ‘Gulf of America’ for the Gulf of Mexico and ‘Lake America’ for Lake Ontario. While the president has the authority to change names used by federal agencies, such changes do not mandate adoption by international bodies or foreign governments.
Trump also mentioned the possibility of renaming New Mexico to ‘New America,’ though noted this would require state-level legislative or constitutional processes. He explicitly ruled out changing the names of the Hudson and Mississippi Rivers.
