US-Canada trade war and Lake Ontario renaming

Overview

President Donald Trump has issued an executive order renaming Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ for all official U.S. federal records and maps. This symbolic action occurs during an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada following the collapse of bilateral trade negotiations.

The United States has imposed 50 percent tariffs on approximately $20 billion to $27 billion of Canadian goods. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced ‘dollar for dollar’ retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports—targeting sectors including steel, dairy, and agricultural machinery—effective September 8. While certain products like seafood have been exempted, the tension has intensified, with Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatening to suspend electricity exports to the U.S. as further retaliation.

In the executive order, the U.S. administration asserts that because the deepest parts of the lake lie within United States territory, the U.S. claims most of its volume. The order describes the lake as an integral asset to American commerce, defense, and settlement. The directive instructs the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Geological Survey to update the Geographic Names Information System within 30 days. This follows a 2025 executive order that renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the ‘Gulf of America’ in federal nomenclature.

Canadian officials have rejected the name change. Prime Minister Carney noted that the name Lake Ontario is derived from the Wendat word ‘Ontari’io,’ meaning ‘the lake is big, the lake is beautiful,’ and stated that ‘Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always.’ Because the lake serves as a shared natural border, the U.S. order is unilateral and does not legally compel Canada to adopt the new designation.
