Donald Trump proposes renaming Atlantic or Pacific Ocean

During a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on October 10, 2026, President Donald Trump suggested renaming either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. He proposed names such as ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas.’

This proposal follows a series of executive actions taken during his second term to rename various geographic landmarks to reflect American identity. Previous changes include directing federal agencies to use ‘Gulf of America’ instead of the Gulf of Mexico and ‘Lake America’ for Lake Ontario. He also restored the name ‘Mount McKinley’ to the highest peak in Alaska, previously known as Denali.

While the president can direct federal agencies to adopt new names for official U.S. government use, such changes have limited international authority over international waters. Some technology companies, including Google and Apple, have previously updated map labels in the U.S. to reflect federal directives. Trump also mentioned a desire to rename a major river, though he explicitly ruled out the Hudson and Mississippi rivers.
