Donald Trump proposes renaming New Mexico to ‘New America’

Donald Trump has renewed his proposal to rename the state of New Mexico to ‘New America,’ claiming the change would increase the state’s prestige, boost property values, and raise resident incomes. In posts on Truth Social, Trump argued that the name change would distance the state from Mexico and foster greater patriotism. He also made unsubstantiated claims that the rebranding might lead to more honest elections in the state.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and other Democratic leaders have rejected the proposal. Lujan Grisham stated that the state’s name is not up for debate, noting that ‘New Mexico’ predates the existence of the United States. Senator Ben Ray Lujan also voiced strong opposition to the suggestion.

Legal experts note that the president lacks the unilateral authority to change a state's official name. Such a modification would require formal constitutional amendment procedures within the state itself. This proposal follows other geographic rebranding efforts by Trump, including renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’ and Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ in federal documents and certain digital maps.
