Zelenskyy proposes US-Russia-Ukraine trilateral summit
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has proposed a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States to discuss ending the conflict. Zelenskyy suggested the meeting could occur as early as September, noting that the Kremlin has shown signs of openness during recent discussions with American emissaries Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
Following a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump expressed optimism regarding a potential deal. Trump described the conversation as ‘great’ and stated that Putin is interested in reaching an agreement, adding that the conflict persists largely due to the mutual animosity between the two leaders. A Russian readout indicated that Trump suggested resolving the conflict could facilitate the full restoration of relations between the US and Russia.
Despite the diplomatic movement, hostilities continue. Russian missile strikes on Kyiv recently killed two people and injured seven. Zelenskyy has also expressed interest in meeting with Trump after September 20 to discuss the deployment of American interceptors to bolster Ukrainian defenses. Meanwhile, the European Union has provided a 90 billion euro loan to support Ukraine.
