Donald Trump pushes Senate to approve permanent daylight saving time

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill to make daylight‑saving time permanent, by a vote of 308‑117. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social urging the Senate to act quickly, saying the twice‑yearly clock change is “foolish, inconvenient and very costly” and that a permanent shift would improve public safety, the economy and health. The proposal has bipartisan backing in the House, especially from coastal lawmakers, while many Midwestern and agricultural representatives oppose it. The Senate has not yet taken up the measure, and its prospects remain uncertain.

Trump argued that ending the clock changes would “strengthen the economy and provide Americans with an extra hour of evening daylight,” and cited studies linking permanent daylight‑saving time to lower crime rates, fewer car accidents and reduced seasonal depression.
