Trump doubts USMCA renewal, Mexico vows to keep T‑MEC alive

U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated that the United States‑Mexico‑Canada Agreement (USMCA, known in Mexico as T‑MEC) may not be renewed, stating “we don’t need anything Canada has, we don’t need anything Mexico has, they need everything we have”. He made the remarks during a press briefing on 10 June 2026, warning that the treaty could expire on 1 July 2036 if the three parties do not agree to extend it.

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded that the trilateral pact will remain in force, emphasizing its benefits for all three economies and urging that the review process should strengthen the agreement. Mexican officials, including the ambassador to the United States and the subsecretary of Foreign Trade, called for calm and highlighted the review as an opportunity to provide investment certainty and reinforce key sectors such as autos, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals. Canada has also signaled its intention to renew. The dispute centers on Trump’s demand for better treatment of the United States while the three nations negotiate the next round of talks, scheduled for mid‑June in Washington.
