Donald Trump mocks Sheinbaum over Gulf of Mexico renaming
U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly mocked Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding a diplomatic dispute over the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’. During recent appearances in Baltimore, Trump recounted a telephone conversation in which he claimed Sheinbaum pleaded with him to reverse the decision following an executive order.
Trump justified the unilateral renaming by claiming the United States controls 93% of the coastline, leaving Mexico with only 7%. However, reports indicate this claim is inaccurate, noting that the coastline is divided more equitably between the two nations, with Mexico possessing a slightly larger portion according to various analyses.
Despite the U.S. domestic decree, the name ‘Gulf of Mexico’ remains the official international designation recognized by the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). President Sheinbaum has consistently rejected the new name, maintaining that the historical name remains the standard used by the global community.
