President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ for official U.S. use. This decision, which directs the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to update its records, has prompted Google Maps to adjust its display. Consequently, users in the United States will see the name ‘Lake America,’ while those in Canada will continue to see ‘Lake Ontario.’ Users in other parts of the world will see both names listed.

The renaming occurs against the backdrop of an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada, characterized by reciprocal 50% tariffs on billions of dollars of goods. Canadian officials have rejected the name change. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the lake’s 400-year-old Indigenous roots, noting the name is derived from the Wendat word ‘Ontari’io.’

In Ontario, Premier Doug Ford criticized the move as ‘completely absurd’ and installed a large sign near Grimsby reading ‘Lake Ontario: Now and Always’ in both English and French. The move follows a similar precedent from early 2025, when Trump ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America.’
