Donald Trump says he will not renew the US‑Mexico‑Canada trade pact

President Donald Trump told reporters that the United States will not seek to renew the North American free‑trade agreement with Canada and Mexico (known in Canada as ACEUM). He said, “Je ne cherche pas à le renouveler,” adding that the U.S. does not need Canada’s cars, lumber or energy, nor Mexico’s goods, and that the previous NAFTA was “the worst trade deal ever concluded.”

The agreement, which must be reviewed annually and formally renewed by July 1, 2026, covers a trade flow of about $1.6 trillion. Canada and Mexico have asked for a 16‑year extension, while the United States has indicated it will negotiate bilateral deals with each partner. The pact includes a clause that allows any party to withdraw, and tariffs imposed on certain Canadian and Mexican products do not apply to goods covered by the agreement.
