Donald Trump shifts US strategy toward economic sanctions and military de-escalation
The United States is shifting its foreign policy approach under President Donald Trump, utilizing economic pressure and military de-escalation as diplomatic tools. In the Middle East, Washington has transitioned from military raids to an aggressive economic warfare strategy against Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the initiative as the “largest coordinated campaign of economic isolation in history,” warning allies and adversaries, including China, that they must comply or face “tremendous economic consequences.” The goal is to isolate the Iranian regime following months of conflict.
Simultaneously, the U.S. is altering its posture in East Asia. Washington has significantly reduced its participation in the Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises with South Korea, cutting the program from eleven days to five and canceling several ground activities. This reduction is viewed as a strategic move to leverage the U.S. military presence to bring Kim Jong Un back to the negotiating table, utilizing Trump’s personal relationship with the North Korean leader as a diplomatic instrument.
