President Donald Trump signs AI executive order placing NSA at center of model review

President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to create a voluntary framework that gives the U.S. government access to advanced artificial‑intelligence models up to 30 days before public release. The order assigns the National Security Agency a central role in classifying “frontier models” and works with the Treasury Department, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Department of Defense to set up a clearinghouse for vulnerability testing and security patches. Leading developers such as Anthropic, OpenAI and Google are urged to submit their models for classified benchmarking to assess national‑security and cyber risks.

In a related memo, Trump called on the U.S. military and national‑security agencies to accelerate the adoption of AI while insisting that autonomous systems respect the chain of command and protect civil liberties. The memo bans the use of AI for censorship, ideological bias or unlawful surveillance and stresses human oversight of autonomous weapon systems. Both actions aim to boost U.S. competitiveness in AI while safeguarding privacy and national security.
