The claim stems from a Panorama episode that, according to Trump, edited excerpts of his January 6, 2021, speech to imply he urged supporters to storm the Capitol.

In response, the BBC has issued a subpoena for a wide range of documents covering the period from November 3, 2020, to January 20, 2021. Requested materials include telephone logs, calendars, appointment schedules, diaries and the names of individuals with whom Trump discussed the “Stop the Steal” rally and the Capitol attack. The broadcaster says the documents are needed to evaluate the alleged financial loss. Legal experts note the case may face hurdles over jurisdiction and First‑Amendment press‑freedom protections.
