Trump BBC defamation case: judge orders financial disclosure

Overview

The lawsuit that former President Donald Trump filed against the British Broadcasting Corporation over a Panorama documentary that edited his Jan. 6, 2021 speech continues to evolve. After dismissing claims against BBC Studios, Trump kept the suit against the main BBC corporation alive. The U.S. Department of Justice has signaled that it may intervene, potentially invoking executive‑privilege arguments.

On 21 July 2026, U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett ordered Trump to produce detailed financial records for more than 400 entities within the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust. The ruling noted that Trump’s claims of $10 billion reputational and economic harm make the documents relevant. The order also permits subpoenas of several close associates and family members, including Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller. The BBC has apologized for the editing that suggested Trump encouraged the Capitol attack. Trump may appeal the decision to District Judge Roy Altman, who has yet to rule on jurisdictional challenges.

The case remains pending, with both parties preparing for further discovery and possible appellate action.
