Donald Trump warns of Iran sanctions and criticizes South Korea

President Donald Trump has warned of imposing severe sanctions on Iran amid ongoing tensions regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the White House, Trump stated, “We have the ability to impose very tough sanctions. Let’s see what happens next.”

Trump suggested that the global reliance on the Strait of Hormuz may decrease due to rising energy production in the United States and the development of new supply routes. While acknowledging that ships currently pass through the waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, he remarked, “I think Hormuz will not be as important as it used to be.”

Additionally, the President expressed dissatisfaction with South Korea for declining to assist Washington in securing the strategic waterway. He noted that South Korea derives approximately 60 percent of its oil from the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also linked Seoul’s stance to concerns regarding large-scale military exercises on the Korean Peninsula, suggesting such activities were inappropriate while he attempted to maintain working relationships with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
