At the same time, Trump’s attempt to end birthright citizenship through the executive order “Protect the Meaning and Value of U.S. Citizenship” was blocked by the courts. The Supreme Court’s majority, led by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, reaffirmed the Fourteenth Amendment, stating that “those born in the United States … are citizens from birth.” The legal defeat keeps the longstanding constitutional guarantee in place.
