Donald Tusk and António Costa discuss EU 2028-2034 budget

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk met with European Council President António Costa to discuss the European Union's budget for the 2028-2034 period. Tusk emphasized that a higher level of EU funding is in the interest of both Europe and Poland, noting that Poland remains one of the largest beneficiaries of EU funds. He stressed the need for the Union to be financially prepared for various geopolitical scenarios, including investments in security, competitiveness, and agriculture to ensure continental sovereignty.

Discussions also touched upon the timeline for budget negotiations. There is pressure to conclude negotiations by the end of 2026 to avoid potential political shifts in major member states, such as France, which could impact the budget's adoption. While the current draft prepared by the European Commission has been characterized by some as unfavorable to Poland, Tusk supports concluding the negotiations promptly to strengthen the Union's resilience against global threats.
