Donald Tusk warns of rising security risks on NATO's eastern flank

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned of deteriorating security conditions on NATO’s eastern flank. Citing intelligence from NATO, Ukraine, and the United States, Tusk cautioned that drones or missiles could cross into European territories supporting Ukraine. He noted that Moscow might frame such incidents as accidents to avoid a formal NATO response, potentially aiming to paralyze the alliance’s readiness to assist members.

Tusk highlighted the increasing use of jet-powered drones, which are harder to intercept, and noted that Russia is focusing on border crossings between Ukraine and its European neighbors. He suggested that Russia is not currently prepared for peace negotiations that do not involve a total Ukrainian capitulation, predicting a critical winter for Ukraine’s energy and transport infrastructure.

In response to these warnings, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed concern that some leaders may be seeking a pretext for a larger conflict between NATO and Russia. Fico stated he would do everything to keep Slovakia out of a war, even if the country were called upon under Article 5. He voiced apprehension regarding potential provocations or 'false flag' operations that could escalate tensions.
