Donautalbahn commuters face chaos due to outdated railway infrastructure

Commuters on the Donautalbahn line between Ingolstadt and Ulm are facing significant disruptions, including canceled trains, delays, and partial track closures requiring bus replacements. The regional operator Agilis reports frequent malfunctions involving level crossings, signals, switches, and the total failure of entire signal boxes.

Agilis CEO Axel Hennighausen identified outdated signal boxes as a primary challenge for the coming years, noting massive difficulties in the conversion and modernization process. While construction is underway to address these deficiencies, permanent improvements are not expected immediately.

In the Augsburg network district operated by Deutsche Bahn, 134 signal boxes exist. Only one is considered state-of-the-art digital technology. While 57 are electronic models of a newer design, 76 still rely on outdated technology that requires labor-intensive manual operation.
