Donovan McKinney defeats Shri Thanedar in Michigan primary

Incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar has lost his bid for a third term in Michigan's 13th Congressional District following a Democratic primary defeat. Donovan McKinney defeated Thanedar with 51.9% of the vote compared to Thanedar's 48.1%.

McKinney, who is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America and Senator Bernie Sanders, is a Black candidate. His victory is seen as a move to restore Black representation in the district, which encompasses portions of Detroit and has historically elected Black representatives. Thanedar, an Indian-American incumbent, had previously supported legislation such as the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act.

Other Indian-American candidates were also featured in recent multi-state primaries. While Thanedar faced a setback, Pramila Jayapal secured a decisive victory in her Washington state primary, and Amish Shah continues his campaign in a competitive Arizona House race.
