Michigan 13th District Democratic primary
Overview
In late July 2026, top House Democratic leaders—including Hakeem Jeffries, Katherine Clark and Pete Aguilar—publicly endorsed incumbent Congressman Shri Thanedar for re‑election in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District, praising his work on affordable housing, groceries and health care and his opposition to former President Donald Trump.
A week later, the Democratic primary was held. State Representative Donavan McKinney defeated Thanedar, becoming the first Black representative from Detroit since 2022. McKinney won 51.9% of the vote to Thanedar's 48.1%. Supported by the Democratic Socialists of America and Senator Bernie Sanders, McKinney's victory is viewed as a move to restore Black representation in the district.
Thanedar, an Indian-American incumbent, conceded and pledged a smooth transition. McKinney now faces Republican Taras Nykoriak in the November general election for a heavily Democratic district.
