Mediterranean Games: Kosovo wins first gold as Turkey climbs medal tally
The 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, have seen significant achievements from Kosovo and Turkey.
Kosovan boxer Donjeta Sadiku secured the nation’s first gold medal of the games in the 60kg category. She defeated Kristina Kuluhova, who competed on behalf of Serbia, in a match that ended in the second round due to an injury to Kuluhova. Following the victory, the Serbian Olympic Committee reportedly chose not to have their athlete participate in the medal ceremony.
Kosovo also saw success in judo, with Fatjona Kasapi, Akil Gjakova, and Flaka Loxha each winning bronze medals.
Turkey has maintained a strong position in the overall medal standings, currently ranking second behind host Italy. The Turkish delegation has amassed a total of 61 medals, including 28 gold, 14 silver, and 19 bronze. Notable Turkish successes include gold medals in badminton (men’s and women’s doubles), judo (Tuğçe Beder in the 48kg category), and archery (women’s classic bow team).
