Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games: infrastructure and finalry

Overview

As the 2026 Mediterranean Games approach, preparations for the August 21 opening in Taranto are intensifying. The Erasmo Iacovone stadium has reopened following a €62 million modernization, part of a larger €275 million budget. The upgraded venue now features over 20,000 seats and meets UEFA third-category standards. In Crispiano, a new specialized archery facility has been constructed to serve as a permanent regional training hub.

Logistical and media partnerships have solidified. Stellantis has been named the Automotive Partner, providing a fleet of over 300 vehicles from brands including Alfa Romeo, FIAT, Lancia, and Jeep. For broadcasting, Sportface TV will act as the technological partner, working with CONI and RAI to provide multi-platform streaming coverage. National visibility has also increased, with Games branding appearing on Milan’s Line M5 metro.

International participation is being finalized. Bosnia and Herzegovina has presented a 111-member delegation, including middle-distance runner Amel Tuka, while Serbia has coordinated logistics for its team in Belgrade. Montenegro has also prepared its delegation, which consists of 55 athletes competing in 13 sports. The Montenegrin Olympic Committee held a formal send-off in Podgorica, noting that the games serve as a testing ground for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. This marks Montenegro’s fifth appearance at the event.

Cultural events include the ‘Midnight Song’ on August 20, featuring an archaeological tour of the Tomb of the Athletes. These preparations build upon previous plans, including the arrival of the ‘Cross of Athletes’ artwork and the official anthem ‘Sott' u' sole’ by Taranto native Mietta.
