Donostia court to review death of Francoist repression victim

A court in Donostia will begin a voluntary jurisdiction procedure to certify the human rights violations suffered by Txomin Letamendi Murua during the Franco dictatorship. The proceedings, promoted by the Basque Observatory of Human Rights (GEBehatokia) with his family's agreement, aim to have the judiciary officially ratify his status as a victim and certify the circumstances surrounding his death.

Letamendi, a musician, former guerilla fighter (gudari), and EAJ-PNV militant, died in Madrid on December 20, 1950, following severe physical and mental torture inflicted by Francoist agents. He had previously been sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to insurrection.

The Basque Government, through Gogora, has already issued an institutional recognition to rehabilitate his honor and provide moral satisfaction, in accordance with the Law of Historical and Democratic Memory of the Basque Country. This legal action seeks to provide formal judicial validation of the repression he endured.
