Niger deploys 1,000 solar boreholes to boost food security

Niger has launched a major technological initiative to enhance food security by deploying 1,000 solar-powered boreholes. The project, spearheaded by the Office National des Aménagements Hydro-Agricoles (ONAHA), aims to transform the Dallol Bosso valley into a year-round productive agricultural hub.

In the Dosso region, authorities have officially received the new equipment, which includes 580-watt solar pumping systems. This shift from fuel-powered pumps to solar technology is intended to reduce costs for local farmers and eliminate dependence on fluctuating hydrocarbon prices. The government plans to use the Dosso implementation as a pilot model for potential nationwide expansion to ensure sustainable irrigation and agricultural sovereignty.
