Double Fine lays off 23 staff after gaining independence from Xbox
Double Fine Productions announced layoffs of 23 employees, roughly a quarter of its workforce, shortly after the studio completed its split from Xbox and returned to independent ownership. Founder Tim Schafer said the cuts were necessary for the "survival of our studio" and emphasized that the decision was not taken lightly.
The studio, which had about 90 staff before the reductions, retained full rights to its intellectual property and game catalog as part of the independence agreement. Xbox issued a statement confirming Double Fine’s independent status and expressing support for the studio’s next chapter. The layoffs occur amid a wider Xbox restructuring that has already removed about 1,600 jobs and plans to cut up to 3,200 positions by the end of the 2027 fiscal year.
