Xbox layoffs, Game Pass backlash intensify
Entities: Ninja Theory · Asha Sharma · State of Decay 3 · Microsoft · Xbox Game Pass
Overview
Microsoft’s Xbox restructuring, announced in July 2024, has continued to widen. By July 2026 the company has cut roughly 3,200‑3,000 development positions across studios such as Bethesda, id Software and Obsidian, and subscriber numbers have slipped from about 34 million to roughly 30 million. Internal dissent has sharpened. A Bloomberg report on 18 July 2026 quoted dozens of Xbox studio executives saying they "absolutely detest" Game Pass, arguing it "destroyed the value of their games" and lowered perceived pricing. New Xbox head Asha Sharma is reportedly reevaluating the model, and analysts note that future flagship titles such as The Elder Scrolls VI could launch at full price before entering the service. The shift away from day‑one releases, already seen with the latest Call of Duty launch, is being discussed as a possible policy change. The layoff wave also hit ZeniMax Online Studios, with 379 employees cut. On 22 July 2026 the studio announced the removal of the Web Crown Store from the official ESO site, moving purchases into‑game and simplifying the Crown Store Showcase to a list‑style format due to reduced staffing for high‑resolution assets. On 24 July 2026 Microsoft disclosed a broader cost‑efficiency drive, trimming about 4,800 jobs worldwide—roughly 2 % of its workforce—with 3,200 cuts in the Xbox division and 1,600 employees dismissed immediately. The plan includes spinning off Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, while Arkane Studios is negotiating with the French workers' union over its future. A separate labour lawsuit was filed in Quebec after layoffs at Bethesda’s Montreal studio, alleging failure to provide statutory notice and severance under provincial law. Concurrently, Microsoft is piloting an ad‑supported Xbox game‑streaming tier that lets Insiders watch ads for free, hour‑limited play sessions, signalling another potential revenue shift.
