Double Fine regains independence after separating from Xbox

Double Fine Productions has regained its independence following a separation from Xbox. While the studio successfully retained ownership of its intellectual properties, the transition required a workforce reduction of approximately one-quarter of its staff.

Founder Tim Schafer described the period of restructuring at Microsoft as a difficult time involving intense negotiations and internal conflicts. He characterized the shift as a ‘creative awakening’ for the remaining team members. Schafer noted that while the studio faced threats of closure during the transition, the move toward independence has provided a new sense of urgency and creativity.

To fund future operations, the studio has launched a Kickstarter campaign for its next project. Schafer indicated that if the campaign reaches a $100 million milestone, the studio will also develop Brutal Legend 2. The studio's return to independence follows seven years of operating under the Microsoft umbrella, a period that included the release of Psychonauts 2.
