Double Fine regains IP and publishing rights after Xbox split

Double Fine Productions has regained ownership of the intellectual property and publishing rights for all games developed during its seven-year tenure under Microsoft. CEO Tim Schafer confirmed that titles such as Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln are being transferred back to the studio, allowing direct sales revenue to support the company’s independent operations.

The transition follows a major restructuring at Xbox led by CEO Asha Sharma, which resulted in the studio becoming independent. While the legal transfer of some titles is still processing, Schafer noted that purchasing existing titles now directly benefits the studio's financial runway. This independence follows a period of workforce reduction, with the studio laying off approximately 25% of its staff to ensure long-term sustainability.

To fund future projects, Double Fine is reviving its Amnesia Fortnight game jam via a Kickstarter campaign starting August 31. This event will allow supporters to vote on which game prototypes developed during the jam will be turned into full titles. The studio's move toward autonomy also allows for greater flexibility regarding future platform releases.
