Double Fine regains IP and publishing rights for all titles

Double Fine Productions has regained ownership of its intellectual property and publishing rights for its entire catalog. Studio founder Tim Schafer confirmed that this includes titles developed during the studio's tenure under Microsoft, such as Psychonauts 2, Keeper, and Kiln.

This transition allows revenue from game sales to flow directly to the studio rather than through a corporate publisher. While the transfer is ongoing and some digital storefronts like Steam still list Xbox Game Studios as a publisher for certain titles, the studio is moving toward full independence. This shift follows a period of restructuring at Microsoft that led to Double Fine separating from the corporation and undergoing staff reductions.

To support its future, Double Fine announced the Amnesia Fortnight 2026 game jam starting August 31. During this event, developers will present early concepts, and fans can vote on which project the studio should develop into a full game. The selected project will be funded through a Kickstarter campaign, which will also support a documentary film produced in collaboration with 2 Player Productions.
