Double Fine returns to independence following Microsoft split

Following a separation from Microsoft, Double Fine Productions has returned to being an independent studio. During PAX West 2026, studio president Tim Schafer discussed the company’s transition and its future direction.

The studio is currently utilizing a Kickstarter campaign to fund its latest Amnesia Fortnight, a game jam designed to produce new micro-games. This initiative provides the necessary financial runway as the team prepares for its next major project. While the studio has indicated that current development is focused on new intellectual properties, Schafer expressed a continued interest in creating a sequel to Brutal Legend, provided he can secure $100 million in funding.

Reflecting on the industry's evolution, Schafer noted that while the landscape has become more difficult for developers due to shifting funding avenues, the studio’s 19 years of prior experience as an independent entity provides a strong foundation for this new chapter.
