DP World and WFP deliver 5,000 tonnes of rice to East Africa

DP World and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have delivered 5,000 metric tonnes of rice to support humanitarian operations in Burundi, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The shipments were transported via DP World’s Shipping Solutions business from the Mundra Terminal in India to the Port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. From there, the WFP utilized its regional logistics network to move the cargo overland to the target countries. This assistance is expected to provide food for more than 14,200 additional people for one month.

The delivery addresses severe food insecurity in the region. The DRC is currently facing a major hunger crisis, with over 27 million people affected by conflict and displacement. Burundi is also experiencing humanitarian pressure due to families fleeing insecurity in eastern DRC, while Rwanda continues to host refugees from neighboring nations. This initiative is part of a broader collaboration established in 2025 to enhance the efficiency and reach of humanitarian logistics networks.
